In many cases you do need six months unexpired on your passport to be granted entry to some countries, some countries require six months unexpired after you leave.
It is a very good rule of thumb to renew your passport six months prior to it expiring, you can renew up to nine months prior to its expiry date, the time left on your old passport is added to your new one.
Travelling around Europe and to the United States and Canada, this rule does not apply.
