About Florida

When people think of Florida images of Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney World may well spring to mind but Florida, nicknamed “The Sunshine State”, offers so much more than theme parks. Situated below Alabama and Georgia and extending out into the Gulf of Mexico the state of Florida offers some surprising natural habitats for many species of birds and wildlife, including two national forests, a national park and several nature reserves such as Merritt Island, teeming with migratory birds in winter.

For the space enthusiasts Florida also offers the Kennedy Space Centre, fifty miles east of Orlando, with an impressive array of rockets and space memorabilia. Search our interactive Google map so see some of the highlights of Florida.

The state is well known for sailing and the changing demographics of this fourth biggest state means that it is becoming less dominated by retired people with many thriving Spanish and French Creole speaking communities.

Reasons to visit Florida

Miami has a huge Hispanic population and is renowned for its lively art deco district at Miami Beach which offers lots of entertainment. Many come to this state to explore the hundred miles of islands south of Miami called the Florida Keys which can be reached via one single highway (Highway 1) and are famous for sport fishing, diving on the coral reefs and their spectacular sunsets. At the end of the road lies Key West which has a very laid back, unique atmosphere.

When to go to Florida

The high season in the south runs from mid December to mid April when hotel prices will rise and you will need to book at least six months in advance to get the best deals.

We recommend that you try travelling to Florida at other times if you are not bound by school holidays, where you will find some great hotel and airfare deals although some may find the weather somewhat hot and sticky around May and June.

From late February to early April many US students head to Florida for their Spring Break holiday and hotel prices often rise during this period when it can get rather rowdy on the beaches. The high season for the north of Florida is from May to October.

Weather in Florida

The northern part of Florida can be as much as 20F cooler than the south and the Nov to April period is the off season period for this region when it can get very cold at night. The coolest months are November to March, considered by many to be the ideal months to visit the south and the inland swamps and parks. Florida is susceptible to hurricanes during the June – September period when the weather can be very hot, rainy and humid.
