When people think of Florida images of Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney World may well spring to mind but Florida, nicknamed “The Sunshine State”, offers so much more than theme parks. Situated below Alabama and Georgia and extending out into the Gulf of Mexico the state of Florida offers some surprising natural habitats for many species of birds and wildlife, including two national forests, a national park and several nature reserves such as Merritt Island, teeming with migratory birds in winter.
For the space enthusiasts Florida also offers the Kennedy Space Centre, fifty miles east of Orlando, with an impressive array of rockets and space memorabilia. Search our interactive Google map so see some of the highlights of Florida.
The state is well known for sailing and the changing demographics of this fourth biggest state means that it is becoming less dominated by retired people with many thriving Spanish and French Creole speaking communities.
Reasons to visit Florida
Miami has a huge Hispanic population and is renowned for its lively art deco district at Miami Beach which offers lots of entertainment. Many come to this state to explore the hundred miles of islands south of Miami called the Florida Keys which can be reached via one single highway (Highway 1) and are famous for sport fishing, diving on the coral reefs and their spectacular sunsets. At the end of the road lies Key West which has a very laid back, unique atmosphere.
